I stumbled across Self Storage in 2018, when I was providing office management duties to a furniture retailer. They had a storage facility running in the unused areas of their furniture store, which was being managed by a real estate agency. I was asked to review the facility and the industry and provide business improvement suggestions.

After lots of research and support from the Self Storage Association and like minded industry leaders, I was able to provide recommendations to the owners on how to improve their business. This resulted in the owners asking me to take on the tasks and roll out the improvements, and I was excited to sink my teeth into the challenge.

We rebranded, developed marketing from scratch (Google Campaigns, Social Media presence and website), implemented management software (no more excel!), set up a dedicated office & box shop and expanded the size mix of units.

With market demand on the rise we expanded. Building an additional 50 units, adding access control and driving dynamic pricing. This led to the former owners being able to sell the business and retire. Under new ownership we rebranded again and I also took on the remote management of an additional two facilities. A further stage of 50 units was built, along with Individual Unit Alarms and life was busy!

Thanks to the support of my team and our hard work, I was honoured to win 2022 Manager of the Year in the Self Storage Association’s Awards for Excellence. My trophy still takes pride in my home office! This year I decided I was ready for a new challenge and started StorKeeper.
